Granite Mountain Charter School Chapter of the National Honor Society
National Honor Society
The National Honor Society was founded in 1921 to create an organization that would recognize and encourage academic achievement while also recognizing service, leadership and character. Our chapter, named for former Hoboken educator Arthur E. Stover, was founded in 1961.
We are a group of individuals committed to the four pillars of Scholarship, Leadership, Character and Service.
Eligibility for National Honor Society (grades 10-12)
To be eligible for induction to the National Honor Society, students must first qualify based on scholarship. Candidates must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher and have been enrolled at the school for at least a semester (unless they were members of the NHS in good standing at their previous school) to be considered. In addition, candidates must exhibit a heart for scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship. Leadership can be as simple as taking on a leadership role in class on projects, or as formal as holding an office in a club or on a team. Service is any time spent doing something for the benefit of others. Character is holding oneself to a high standard of conduct always.

How to Join
At the beginning of the school year, the group's advisor identifies eligible candidates and invites all of those students to become candidates for admission. Parents and HST’s of those students are notified of this invitation. Students will receive their invite in September and will have 10 school days from receiving the email to complete the requested items.
Students must complete the following steps to continue:
- Complete a candidate information form
- Write an essay
- Submit Letters of Recommendation
- Submit the waiver
- Additional items may be requested if necessary
- Attend Induction if accepted
Why Join?
Induction into the National Honor Society formalizes a student's commitment to be the best
they can be. It demonstrates to the world that they adhere to lofty ideals. It introduces them to other like-minded individuals and brings them in contact with community organizations through service projects.
Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.
Meetings
The club meets monthly, starting with a Candlelight Induction Ceremony conducted in October. We will be meeting virtually through Zoom.
